Dates: 12–15 February 2018

Many problems in mechanics involve deformable domains with moving boundaries. Examples include

  • fluid-structure interaction
  • free surface flows
  • flows over soft tissues and textiles
  • flows involving accretion/erosion
  • flows through deformable porous media
  • material forming
  • shape optimisation

to name but a few. The interaction of the moving boundary with the participating media leads to fascinating phenomena in a very broad range of contexts such as:

  • flutter
  • wave-breaking
  • dune formation
  • ripple formation on the ocean floor
  • flow instabilities
  • structure resonance and failure
  • atherosclerosis
  • ice formation on aircraft wings.

This symposium, which is going to be the first IUTAM Symposium in New Zealand, aims to gather the community of engineers and scientists involved in moving boundary and related problems in mechanics.

The symposium will facilitate a mix of researchers working on the development of related mathematical methods and algorithms, and applications of recent and ongoing problems. We also encourage researchers performing experiments related to moving boundary problems to participate. Since the community of researchers involved in moving boundary problems in mechanics is fairly fragmented, we believe that this symposium will be a unique opportunity to cross-fertilise ideas and concepts from different disciplines of mechanics and foster engineering applications.

Jonathan Borwein Commemorative Conference

Jonathan M. Borwein The University of Newcastle will be holding a conference to commemorate the life and work of Laureate Professor Jonathan Borwein, whose contribution to mathematics and the mathematical community has been vast, and cut short by his unexpected passing in 2016: (see website).

The conference will be held 25–29 September 2017 at one of Jon's favourite venues, "Noah's on the Beach" overlooking the ocean at Newcastle. Registration will be available shortly at https://carma.newcastle.edu.au/meetings/jbcc/

The breadth and impact of Jon's achievements in mathematics and its advocacy are extraordinary. These will be commemorated in five themes around which the conference will be organised:

Each theme will be opened by a keynote address by the chair or delegated key collaborator of Jon in the area, reflecting upon Jon's work in the field and its impact.

All talks are by invitation. Anyone interested in speaking should contact the chair of the relevant theme or the overall conference chair to request an invitation. While we will do our best to fit you in, the number of talks is limited and we expect interest will be high, so don't be disappointed if we are unable to accommodate you.

A proceedings will be published by Springer, edited by Brailey Sims.

The AMSI/AustMS 2017 Workshop in Harmonic Analysis and its Applications

Harmonic Analysis and Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) have important roles in fundamental and applied mathematical research with extensive applications to other research fields such as complex analysis, mathematical modelling, signal processing, medical imaging.

This workshop, organised on the occasion of Professor Xuan Duong turning 60 in 2017, will bring the leading experts from all over the world including USA, Europe and Asia to Australia to be together with Australian experts as well as early career researchers and PhD. students. WIMSIG Conference 2017: Celebration of Women in Australian Mathematical Sciences

The Women in Mathematics group of the Australian Mathematical Society is organizing Australia's first research conference showcasing the research of women in the mathematical sciences. Workshop in Tensor categories and field theory

Dates: 5–9 June 2017

The recent years have seen a rich cross-fertilisation of ideas between physics and mathematics that has led to fantastic advances in each field. A prominent example of this is the notion of a tensor category. These abstract structures have a depth and ubiquity that has made them indispensable knowledge for many modern research fields including conformal field theory and vertex algebras, knot theory, operator algebras and subfactors, quantum groups, representation theory, topological quantum field theory and applied fields such as condensed matter physics. Moreover, the foundational work in these areas is inextricably linked to high-profile names such as Drinfeld, Huang, Jones, Kazhdan–Lusztig, Moore–Seilberg, Reshetikhin–Turaev, and Witten.

This workshop will bring together a dynamic mix of international experts from the mathematics and mathematical physics communities in order to foster communication and collaboration and disseminate this important work to graduate students and early career researchers. This is a very special IWOCA, dedicated to the memory of Prof. Mirka Miller. Mirka was one of the founders of IWOCA (then known as AWOCA) and had attended many gatherings of this workshop since its initiation in 1988. She had been an active member of the IWOCA Steering Committee since its inception in 2006.

The series of IWOCA conferences grew out of over 25 years history of the International (since 2007) respectively Australasian (until 2006) Workshops on Combinatorial Algorithms. Previous IWOCA and AWOCA meetings have been held in Australia, Canada, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Indonesia, India, Italy, Japan, South Korea, UK, and the US.

CATS2017 — Computational & Algorithmic Topology, Sydney

Dates: Tuesday 27 June – Saturday 1 July 2017

Motivation

This workshop at the University of Sydney will bring together experts and emerging researchers from Australia, the USA and Europe to report on recent results and explore future directions in computational and algorithmic topology and related areas. There will be a focus on problems in low-dimensional geometry and topology, and on the development of practical algorithms and their implementation. This is an area with an abundance of computational and algorithmic challenges, where practical solutions to many solvable problems, such as the homeomorphism problem, remain elusive. This workshop aims to stimulate interaction between researchers in order to bring about new collaborations on difficult problems that cannot be tackled from one viewpoint alone. We plan to have introductory talks on the first three days of the workshop, followed by research talks on the remaining two days.

The timing for this workshop is chosen to allow participants at SoCG 2017 two days for collaboration, sight seeing and travel to Brisbane!

The aim of this workshop is to bring together the world's foremost experts on the theory of semigroups and their relationships to other fields of mathematics such as operator algebras and totally disconnected locally compact groups. This workshop will allow the international leaders in the field to come to Australia to teach young Australian ECRs, and to forge new collaborations with Australian mathematicians.

Operator algebras associated to semigroups can be traced back to a famous theorem of Coburn from the 1960s. The theory has recently been reinvigorated through Xin Li's construction of semigroup C*-algebras. Li's construction has introduced new and interesting classes of C*-algebras, which have deep connections to number theory and dynamical systems. One connection that will be thoroughly explored through this meeting is that to the representation theory of totally disconnected locally compact groups.
