IGA Australia–China Conference on Non-Commutative Geometry

Dates & Venue: 18–22 December 2017
Venue: The University of Adelaide, South Australia

Noncommutative geometry (NCG) is a theory using algebra of operators to study a class of nonstandard spaces, initially arising from quantum mechanics. Over the past few decades, it developed into an active research area with connections to many branches of mathematics and physics. This conference will bring together leading experts and early career researchers working in several streams of NCG, namely, C*-algebra, dynamics, K-theory, representation theory and mathematical physics, to promote the dissemination of novel research findings. This conference is a great opportunity for research communications and collaborations between Australian and Chinese mathematicians, and between students and experts in this field.

Risk: modelling, optimization and inference
with applications in Finance, Insurance and Superannuation

Dates: 7–8 December 2017
Venue: Lecture Theatre A, Robert Webster Building, UNSW Sydney, Australia

AFAS Macquarie University, School of Mathematics and Statistics UNSW, and School of Risk and Actuarial Studies UNSW are organizing this two-day workshop. This is going to be a very interesting workshop, with many high calibre international researchers presenting.

In the wake of the latest financial crisis, hurricane damages, the growing number and severity of bushfires and floods, the benefits from risk management are well understood by the community. Modelling and assessing risk, risk evaluation and estimation is a current issue for many diverse industries. The role of academics is to provide useful fundamental research in this area that is to be implemented in the industry. Important application areas are Finance, Insurance and Superannuation.

It is jointly organised by:

The idea of the workshop is to keep the level of talks to be suitable for postgraduate (and advanced undergraduate) students, as well as for researchers and practitioners, particularly from the Finance, Insurance, and Superannuation Industries, who would like to learn more about the mathematical, statistical and operations research aspects of risk. Many leading experts in the above areas will give presentations at the workshop. The workshop's dates of Thursday and Friday, 7–8 December 2017 are chosen to be close to the dates of the annual ‘Quantitative Methods in Finance’ conference (QMF) that will start in Sydney on Monday 11 December 2017.

Conference logoAustralian–German Workshop on Differential Geometry in the Large

Dates: Conference: 4–8 February 2019
            Workshop: 10–17 February 2019
Venue: University of Melbourne, Creswick campus
Water Street, Creswick, Victoria, 3363, Australia

Program Description

Differential geometry is one of the most research-intensive areas of mathematics in recent decades. It has a long tradition that traces its development back well over a century. Its current prominence stems from its position at the crossroads of many active fields such as:

  • topology
  • metric geometry
  • analysis
  • partial differential equations
  • Lie and other forms of group theory.

Its influence spreads well beyond the confines of pure mathematics to interact with theoretical physics and extends to a multitude of practical applications as diverse as engineering, robotics and computer vision.

  • In the first week of the program, we plan an international conference to highlight recent advances in global Riemannian and metric geometry, topology, and geometric analysis to foster communication between experts and early career researchers from Australia and abroad and identify directions to set the stage for future advances.

In particular, we plan to have a problem session towards the end of the conference that will emphasise known problems in the field, but will go beyond to zero in upon new problems emerging from our discussions during the workshop. This will be beneficial to young mathematicians wanting a comprehensive overview and keep abreast of up to the minute developments and open problems.

  • In the second week, we plan to hold the first Australian–German workshop on differential geometry with about 20 Australian and German geometers who participated in the conference, focussing on new problems and potential directions of future research that came up in the first week.

Germany has a long and strong tradition in differential geometry and there are many mathematicians from both countries who presently enjoy scientific exchange and interaction with one another. The workshop is intended to strengthen and deepen these existing connections and inspire future research and educational exchange and collaboration between both countries.

ISCB ASC 2018 logo

Joint International Society for Clinical Biostatistics and Australian Statistical Conference

Dates: 26–30 August 2018
Venue: Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, Melbourne, Australia

The Conference hosted by the International Society for Clinical Biostatistics and the Statistical Society of Australia will bring together hundreds of statistical researchers from across the globe. The aim of this conference is to bring together a broad range of statistical researchers across a variety of research areas to facilitate the international exchange of theory, methods and applications.

This, the 24th Australian Statistical Conference (ASC) and the 39th conference of the ISCB, promises to be a fascinating meeting as Big Data becomes commonplace, personalized medicine becomes palpable with rapidly advancing “omics” technologies, census-taking faces unprecedented pressures, environmental concerns place ecological research under increasing strain, and online social interaction becomes the norm. Have statistical methods kept pace with societal change?

The biennial ASC is a valuable opportunity for statisticians across Australia to meet, hear the latest research developments, and form collaborations across a range of research areas. By combining the conference with the ISCB’s annual conference, participants will also benefit from an international and cross-disciplinary engagement. This joint conference is a particularly exciting venture for the ISCB as this is the first time that the society’s conference will be held outside of the Northern hemisphere. By bringing the ISCB conference to the Australasian region, we aim to attract biostatisticians working across the Asia–Pacific region to this important biostatistical conference, and provide an opportunity to hear from and interact with international experts in this field.

Keynote Speakers

  • Chris Holmes
  • Louise Ryan
  • Susan Murphy
  • Thomas Lumley

The conference will be held at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, situated alongside the Yarra River in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD. The conference will make the most of all that the vibrant city of Melbourne has to offer, from the secret laneways and rooftops, to the cultural hub of Federation Square. Not to mention the award-winning food and coffee. The conference will have a distinctly Australian flavour, with excursions incorporating iconic Australian experiences such as native wildlife encounters, the Yarra Valley winery region, café culture walks and the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

ISCB ASC 2018 promises to be a truly Melburnian experience not to be missed!

We look forward to seeing you in Melbourne in 2018!
